Powder River County is located in the Southeastern part of Montana. The county was established in 1919 with the town of Broadus as the county seat. The name was derived from the Powder River that flows through county, often described as "A mile wide and an inch deep, too thin to plow and too thick to drink." Powder River County contains 2.1 million acres of land of which 65% is privately owned. With a county population in 2000 of 1858, it's said there are more livestock and wildlife than people living in the county!

Powder River County is supported mainly through agriculture with a limited amount of oil and timber production. Tourism and the transportation industry gives a boost to the local businesses along US HWY 212 and US HWY 59. During the summer months, we welcome the bikers that travel to the Sturgis bike rally. In the fall we welcome our out-of-town hunters.  Broadus, the county seat, is also located near several national monuments and parks to include Devil's Tower, Mount Rushmore National Park, Little Bighorn Battlefield, and Yellowstone National Park.
